hey, pete. just looked my own self up in yearbook. i was a member of the Crest Club. what the hell was the Crest Club. i remember the other 2 things i was involved with. p.s. never did any drugs in h.s. & still don't know what Crest Club was.

I can't believe Fels is being torn down. I had such a good time at Fels. There are so MANY fond memories. It was so modern compared to Carnell.
I shared so many fits of laughter with my good friend Robin. (Green) We laughed in so many periods & different rooms in Fels. We frequently couldn't stop laughing, if it was inappropriate. We received many detentions where the laughter continued. Many offenses were in study hall, in the auditorium. The lunchroom was fun as well. One memory of the lunchroom was that plates of black olives were sold. I don't know what food group it fit into - but it was popular! Robin & I became friendly in Carnell in 4th or 5th grade. Today, we are still good friends even though we live in different states. We still enjoy a good laugh.
We went to Camp Council together. We saw the Beatles together. I can go on & on. In 8th grade, I met Libby (Kolman) . The 3 of us became friends & are still close friends now. We still laugh about Libby's bedroom on Unruh Ave. She had a hole in her screen that fit a cigarette she was sneaking. She puffed it through the screen so that the smoke went out into the driveway.
I remember vividly Mr. Maher's (history teacher) face in 7th grade when he told us that President Kennedy was shot. Eileen, I had Mrs. Ostheimer for algebra. She was a good teacher. Math was not my strength but I did well in algebra 1.
To mshapiro10; yes my husband did live on Tyson Ave. His name is Ron. Our last name is infamous! I asked him to take my name since it was simple. We met many years later - as adults. When I was in NE, he was married & in graduate school.

Great reading about some of my NE(69) classmates. Unfortunately my Elemtary school years were spent at Ethan Allen. I moved to the Notheast (1964) just in time to go to Wilson Jr High. Anyone out there from Allen? As for past friends....Hi to Rich M, (went to several car races with you), Ilene Appel(played cards and did the race track thing with Shark back in the day, also married a Cheri Appel) and of course, Mimi and Bruce S. Many others I know by name but it seems most of the guys I hung with are not around or can't be found. Oh well, still love hearing the stories from all of you. Keep up the good work Pete. I also live in LA.

Hey all,
I was quickly pulled into these memories so much so that I think my husband (Rob) left the house without a proper goodbye. Pete, I'll let you slide on the Cosmo offer...here goes the memories of a Spruance, Fels graduate: I remember running in the huge school yard during recesses and lunches chasing after boys and sometimes being lifted into the air when heading downhill towards the monkey bars near the outdoor bathrooms on windy days.(I was a beanpole in those days) I totally loved the 2 cent peppermint squares they sold in the cafeteria. I was a SIP (safety patrol) with an outdoor post at Large and Horrocks and then got the coveted position at the front doors holding them open for the teachers! I remember assemblies and singing "You'll never walk alone and Que Sera" but still cringe when I think of the kid next to me picking his nose and flinging his bougers my way. Yeech! He laughed. I remember dark basement parties with Preston, maybe Rich Magaziner, Mark Tucker and I'm sure I'm forgetting some other young hotties. Anybody know what happened to Susan Shubert? We had swimming lessons across the street at Max Myers. I cracked my head open jumping from the baby swings (before they padded the ground) and had to be rushed to Frankford H. for 4 stitches. But the wiggly waggly slide was the best. The swings were uplifting and that giraffe statue was a work of art. I do remember saving my quarters in a PSFS account. I don't remember the teacher but I loved Art class. Mrs. Flynn? had real blonde hair that I stared at all the time and Mr. Catalano the Science teacher was a hunk who I later introduced myself to about 20 years later at a big union meeting. He was still handsome. Fels will have to be another time, but I leave you with a smile on my face. Thanks, Bette Giwerc Allekotte

Great memories! I do have to correct one thing though. I was also a member of the safety patrol which was led by Mr. Friedman. I was posted at Large and St. Vincent. i don't think Large and Horrocks intersect so you were probably posted at Horrrocks and St. Vincent or Horrocks and Princeton.
Do you remember that the captain of the safety patrol at Solis Cohen was Steve Silverman. He moved away when we were 12 or 13 and went to Lincoln High School. I remember our football team was playing Lincoln at Lincoln's field. I lined up across from a big strong end and noticed his face. I said Steve? He said Pete? We then proceeded to pound away at each other the whole game. We won that game because they couldn't defend or figure out our trap blocking. Tommy Sherer has a big game running the football.
Anyway, I ran into Steve later while our kids were preparing for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. He became a lawyer and then ran for District Justice and won. Then the sad part.
Steve asked me for email addresses of my classmates that lived in our neighborhood. He wanted to maintain an email list of neighborhood parents and keep them updated about what was happening in our neighborhood. Then in one of his update emails, Steve told everyone that he had learned that he had a rare cancer but was determined to fight it. Six months later, in 2005, he died.

I was in Mrs. Kahan's class too at Solis Cohen the day that JFK was shot, Bob. I remember it vividly just as you described in your email although I don't remember you being the teachers pet....I thought I was....lol. But seriously, I can still see all of us outside the Northeast Regional library and seeing Mrs. Kahan crying, not totally understanding the impact of what happened.

Isn't it amazing how much so many of us have in common,while being so different?How fortunate and yet unfortunate it is being the children of survivors.My small family had always been looked on as different.My mother and father divorced when I was 2,the woman who was my "mom" was a black nurse who came home from the hospital with me and raised me with my father.Both of them were the best people I've ever known.My father never failed to amaze me with his generosity of spirit and his ability to forgive but never forget.Mattie was just the best mom anyone could wish for,loving,smart and proud.They both taught me a lot about the evils of prejudice.
Aging seems to level the playing field and hopefully we realize that those differences help us to be better people,more accepting of the different and being able to learn from others who are different.Children of survivors have a tendency towards special psychological issues.I hope yours were not too bad,it seems you have come through well.As have I,as I said,my life turned out very well,I've gone everywhere and done all the things I had wanted to do.
I'm still on the fence about the reunion,but am leaning more towards going.I'm really enjoying the various posts and you've done a great job maintaining the web site and newsletters.

Thanks for sharing Jackie. They say adversity builds character. It seems you have developed a lot of character. As for me, I'm no different than you. I just rolled with the punches and somehow always landed on my feet. I know many children of survivors and most have had happy successful lives.
I hope to see you at our reunion and I hope you'll continue to participate in our online "virtual" reunion until then.

Two of who I thought were the best elementary school teachers in the world were Mrs. Peterson and Mr. Catalano in 6th grade. I had Mr. Catalano. Remember playing the melody flute in his class during his music sessions. He also led the school orchestra in which I played the clarinet and John Betoff played the bass drum. Some other teachers I had in Spruance were:
Kindergarden - Mrs. Miller
1rst grade - Miss Elster - what a dish
2A - Mrs. McClister - a little old woman with a roll book that was bigger than her body
2B - Mrs. Perkins
3A - Miss Weisboard - another dish
3B - Mrs. Aigin
4th grade - Mrs. Goodman
5th grade - Mrs. Roland
6th grade - Mr. Catalano
I remember that every now and then they had 'Book Day' where you could go and buy a book.
Other teachers I remember but didn't have:
Mrs. Hoffman
Mrs. Finkelstein
Mrs. Cramer
Mrs. Jacobs
Mr. Cusack
Mrs. Edelman (kindergarden teacher)
I remember the beginning of every school year where part of the art supplies you needed was an oil cloth that you put on top of the desk and the smell that it had.
The music assemblies that were led by Mrs. Prone (I think that was her name).
Coming home after school and watching TV shows like:
The Mickey Mouse Club
American Bandstand
Wild Bill Hickock
Superman
Popeye Theatre (with Sally Star of course). Remember the guy that substituted for her every now and then who called himself Yo' Sammity Sam?
Remember Gunner Back, the news anchor for ABC, Wally Canaan the weather man
Prime time westerns like Maverick, Sugarfoot, Bronco Lane, Cheyenne, The Rebel, Wanted Dead or Alive, The Lone Ranger
Other TV shows like Highway Patrol, Rescue 8, The Whirlybirds, Sky King, Fireball XL Five (a marionette tv show), Clutch Cargo cartoons where only the mouths moved,
the Saturday Night version of Bandstand where Dick Clark counted down the top ten hits of the week
Does anyone remember the bizzard of 1958? We lost power for about a week and my dad had to get dry ice so our food wouldn't spoil.
Those were the days.

P.S.-- I checked the kindergarten photo, Mrs. Weiss class, Moore. It's dated Nov. 1957. I think Merle Gay posted it somewhere in the past few months. I'm sitting next to Larry Inver, then Lisa Black. Also in the photo are Linda Bass, Robert Faber, Ilene Rittenberg, Gary Turetsky, Stanton Zucker, Sherry Weiner, Penny White, Linda Berman, Sydria Schneider and others--32 of us. We were all so adorable!! I'll try to scan it and get it posted. Toby, I don't see you in that picture, so maybe you were in a different class? Did we have kindergarten for one semester or a full year?

Reading all these memories really brings me back. Can't help but smile when I read all the memories. I went to Spruance and Fels. At Spruance we brought "milk money" to school for our daily carton of milk. I also remember banking day, but can't remember the bank. It was so simple then, and a lot more thoughtful in preparing us to be productive adults. I remember the crossing guard for Spruance, Angie, who crossed those of us who walked to school at Magee and Horrocks. She lived on Souder St and had twins, Tommy and Maryanne. I think they were our age, but don't remember them going to Northeast. I have my kindergarten picture from Spruance, which is different from the one that posted. I think mine is from 1B. When I figure out how to scan and send, I'll pass it along. I can identify a lot of people on the picture.
I am hoping to get in for the reunion. My family and I are coming in (we live in Scottsdale, AZ) for my mother's 90th birthday over Labor Day, so I'm not sure about a trip back a month later.
Kennedy assassination.........my grandfather died Nov 16, so we were sitting Shiva at my house. I remember it being 2 terrible deaths for our family.

Hello all, if I remember correctly, I was also a banker, I believe with Andrea Scharf, we were both bankers I believe for PSFS savings accounts in Solis-Cohen, Andrea, if you are out there, please let me know if I am correct. Sorry I missed you guys at Memories, as I live in Ventnor, and used to go there often with my wife, who I met at the Greenhouse, 11 years, just around our reunion time(oct. 4), my second wife, and we have a son, who is going to be 5 next month, figure if Jack Nicholson can do it, so can I, and Mick Jagger once said, "age is only a number". I have 3 grown daughters from my previous marriage, in their 20s.

It's pretty impressive (from a guy's perspective) that you finally scored a son on your second time around while already into your 50's.
I don't know of any additional scheduled Memories reunions but someone may try to do it.
Why don't you join us for our 40 year reunion in October and we'll all help you and your wife celebrate your 12th wedding anniversary.

Mark Laskin, I remember you so well from elementary school--I think you're in a picture from one of my birthday parties, but I'd have to find the photos and check. Can't count on my memory anymore.
Barbara Lewis, hi! You have me partly confused with Eileen Rudnick, who lived down the street from me on Kerper. Her nickname was Sugy. I didn't have a nickname. Eileen and I, oddly enough, never had any classes together, though we went to all the same schools. Except for art class. We both went to Saturday Morning School Art League. I attended it at NE from 7 to 12 grade. But Barbara, I'm sure we had some classes together, or Brownies, or something, because for sure I remember you.
Toby Schaffer, I didn't remember we were in both Mr. Myerov and Miss Ronaghan's classes. I used to have such a great memory. I do remember you very well, I assumed it was from high school. I did not remember about the sailboat he painted in our autograph books until you mentioned it. Now I can see it in my mind's eye very clearly. I have it in a box somewhere--I've got to find it! Re: kindergarten, I recently looked at the kindergarten picture, but don't recall if I was in am or pm, Jan-June 1957. I do remember I had Mrs Weiss the whole time (she's in the picture) and was in the class with Merle Gay, Bonnie Kauffman, Roz Katz, I think Larry Inver, Elissa Black--I've got to go find it and see if we were in the same class...I think it was AM--I remember waiting in the little driveway in the morning? with my mother to be let in. Toby, if you were at Fels, were we in 7-6 together?...Miss Ronaghan really was the musical director for Moore, as in Let's Put On A Show! Wasn't it great to be in her famous, yearly St Patrick's Day Show! We learned every Irish song in existence. It was so much fun!
Brenda Weiser and Dell: I would love to attend a Camp Council Reunion, but can't possibly attend in August because I live in Portland, Oregon and can only make one trip. I wonder who organizes them, and if there's any chance of moving it to October?!
Whoever had Mr Norsoph at Fels, so did I, but not for homeroom. He was a doll. I used to sit in science class and take notes of all the jokes he made. I have most of the Fels Chips magazines, but can't possibly lug them onto the airplane. Did anyone have Miss Likach, and remember having to relearn English as if we were Venutians? A trial program that that was a total flop. Also speed reading with Mr. Rodgers? Sandi, hi, it's hard to believe Fels has been condemned. How did that happen?!
I'm going on and on---sorry. These emails are bringing up so many memories, both good and bad. I'm finding it great fun to connect, even with people I never knew.

This is fascinating. As I read these rememberances, I keep trying to recall my elementary school and things we did. Frankly, we weren't much different from the scenes described here. Movies, music, lots of school work, certain teachers remain etched in memory.
The day (in my case, evening around 8:30 pm) President Kennedy was shot, there was a great bridge game going on in my house. The tv was on and I was watching a movie when it got interrupted with the announcement. The game ended right then and there, everyone was crying. I recall the adults discussing possibilities of another invasion of Poland by Russia. Interestingly enough, Poland had a week of mourning for him. I didn't sleep that night worried about a war. Like you, that night will stay with me forever.

I remember being at Fels in Mr. Leach's 7th grade music class when word came in that Kennedy was shot We were sent home on the bus, and when I arrived home- my brother told me he was dead. It was stunning.
I went to Moore school and remember my first grade teacher was Mrs. Walter. Does anyone remember her. She was very nice, I remember Third grade was Miss Klein ,Forth was Mrs Aikens , 5th was Mr, Rosenheim, and 6th Mrs. Ronahan. I do not remember my second grade teacher. Anyone have a clue.
