hey, pete. just looked my own self up in yearbook. i was a member of the Crest Club. what the hell was the Crest Club. i remember the other 2 things i was involved with. p.s. never did any drugs in h.s. & still don't know what Crest Club was.

I wasn't a member of the crest club. What on earth was it? You got me. Anyone remember the infamous Crest Club?

Hi all from Cyndi (Hirsch) Sopenoff,

I can't believe Fels is being torn down. I had such a good time at Fels. There are so MANY fond memories. It was so modern compared to Carnell.

I shared so many fits of laughter with my good friend Robin. (Green) We laughed in so many periods & different rooms in Fels. We frequently couldn't stop laughing, if it was inappropriate. We received many detentions where the laughter continued. Many offenses were in study hall, in the auditorium. The lunchroom was fun as well. One memory of the lunchroom was that plates of black olives were sold. I don't know what food group it fit into - but it was popular! Robin & I became friendly in Carnell in 4th or 5th grade. Today, we are still good friends even though we live in different states. We still enjoy a good laugh.

We went to Camp Council together. We saw the Beatles together. I can go on & on. In 8th grade, I met Libby (Kolman) . The 3 of us became friends & are still close friends now. We still laugh about Libby's bedroom on Unruh Ave. She had a hole in her screen that fit a cigarette she was sneaking. She puffed it through the screen so that the smoke went out into the driveway.

I remember vividly Mr. Maher's (history teacher) face in 7th grade when he told us that President Kennedy was shot. Eileen, I had Mrs. Ostheimer for algebra. She was a good teacher. Math was not my strength but I did well in algebra 1.

To mshapiro10; yes my husband did live on Tyson Ave. His name is Ron. Our last name is infamous! I asked him to take my name since it was simple. We met many years later - as adults. When I was in NE, he was married & in graduate school.

Great reading about some of my NE(69) classmates. Unfortunately my Elemtary school years were spent at Ethan Allen. I moved to the Notheast (1964) just in time to go to Wilson Jr High. Anyone out there from Allen? As for past friends....Hi to Rich M, (went to several car races with you), Ilene Appel(played cards and did the race track thing with Shark back in the day, also married a Cheri Appel) and of course, Mimi and Bruce S. Many others I know by name but it seems most of the guys I hung with are not around or can't be found. Oh well, still love hearing the stories from all of you. Keep up the good work Pete. I also live in LA.

Hey all,

I was quickly pulled into these memories so much so that I think my husband (Rob) left the house without a proper goodbye. Pete, I'll let you slide on the Cosmo offer...here goes the memories of a Spruance, Fels graduate: I remember running in the huge school yard during recesses and lunches chasing after boys and sometimes being lifted into the air when heading downhill towards the monkey bars near the outdoor bathrooms on windy days.(I was a beanpole in those days) I totally loved the 2 cent peppermint squares they sold in the cafeteria. I was a SIP (safety patrol) with an outdoor post at Large and Horrocks and then got the coveted position at the front doors holding them open for the teachers! I remember assemblies and singing "You'll never walk alone and Que Sera" but still cringe when I think of the kid next to me picking his nose and flinging his bougers my way. Yeech! He laughed. I remember dark basement parties with Preston, maybe Rich Magaziner, Mark Tucker and I'm sure I'm forgetting some other young hotties. Anybody know what happened to Susan Shubert? We had swimming lessons across the street at Max Myers. I cracked my head open jumping from the baby swings (before they padded the ground) and had to be rushed to Frankford H. for 4 stitches. But the wiggly waggly slide was the best. The swings were uplifting and that giraffe statue was a work of art. I do remember saving my quarters in a PSFS account. I don't remember the teacher but I loved Art class. Mrs. Flynn? had real blonde hair that I stared at all the time and Mr. Catalano the Science teacher was a hunk who I later introduced myself to about 20 years later at a big union meeting. He was still handsome. Fels will have to be another time, but I leave you with a smile on my face. Thanks, Bette Giwerc Allekotte

Great memories! I do have to correct one thing though. I was also a member of the safety patrol which was led by Mr. Friedman. I was posted at Large and St. Vincent. i don't think Large and Horrocks intersect so you were probably posted at Horrrocks and St. Vincent or Horrocks and Princeton.
Do you remember that the captain of the safety patrol at Solis Cohen was Steve Silverman. He moved away when we were 12 or 13 and went to Lincoln High School. I remember our football team was playing Lincoln at Lincoln's field. I lined up across from a big strong end and noticed his face. I said Steve? He said Pete? We then proceeded to pound away at each other the whole game. We won that game because they couldn't defend or figure out our trap blocking. Tommy Sherer has a big game running the football.
Anyway, I ran into Steve later while our kids were preparing for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. He became a lawyer and then ran for District Justice and won. Then the sad part.
Steve asked me for email addresses of my classmates that lived in our neighborhood. He wanted to maintain an email list of neighborhood parents and keep them updated about what was happening in our neighborhood. Then in one of his update emails, Steve told everyone that he had learned that he had a rare cancer but was determined to fight it. Six months later, in 2005, he died.

I was in Mrs. Kahan's class too at Solis Cohen the day that JFK was shot, Bob. I remember it vividly just as you described in your email although I don't remember you being the teachers pet....I thought I was....lol. But seriously, I can still see all of us outside the Northeast Regional library and seeing Mrs. Kahan crying, not totally understanding the impact of what happened.

Isn't it amazing how much so many of us have in common,while being so different?How fortunate and yet unfortunate it is being the children of survivors.My small family had always been looked on as different.My mother and father divorced when I was 2,the woman who was my "mom" was a black nurse who came home from the hospital with me and raised me with my father.Both of them were the best people I've ever known.My father never failed to amaze me with his generosity of spirit and his ability to forgive but never forget.Mattie was just the best mom anyone could wish for,loving,smart and proud.They both taught me a lot about the evils of prejudice.

Aging seems to level the playing field and hopefully we realize that those differences help us to be better people,more accepting of the different and being able to learn from others who are different.Children of survivors have a tendency towards special psychological issues.I hope yours were not too bad,it seems you have come through well.As have I,as I said,my life turned out very well,I've gone everywhere and done all the things I had wanted to do.

I'm still on the fence about the reunion,but am leaning more towards going.I'm really enjoying the various posts and you've done a great job maintaining the web site and newsletters.

Thanks for sharing Jackie. They say adversity builds character. It seems you have developed a lot of character. As for me, I'm no different than you. I just rolled with the punches and somehow always landed on my feet. I know many children of survivors and most have had happy successful lives.

I hope to see you at our reunion and I hope you'll continue to participate in our online "virtual" reunion until then.

Two of who I thought were the best elementary school teachers in the world were Mrs. Peterson and Mr. Catalano in 6th grade. I had Mr. Catalano. Remember playing the melody flute in his class during his music sessions. He also led the school orchestra in which I played the clarinet and John Betoff played the bass drum. Some other teachers I had in Spruance were:

Kindergarden - Mrs. Miller

1rst grade - Miss Elster - what a dish

2A - Mrs. McClister - a little old woman with a roll book that was bigger than her body

2B - Mrs. Perkins

3A - Miss Weisboard - another dish

3B - Mrs. Aigin

4th grade - Mrs. Goodman

5th grade - Mrs. Roland

6th grade - Mr. Catalano

I remember that every now and then they had 'Book Day' where you could go and buy a book.

Other teachers I remember but didn't have:

Mrs. Hoffman

Mrs. Finkelstein

Mrs. Cramer

Mrs. Jacobs

Mr. Cusack

Mrs. Edelman (kindergarden teacher)

I remember the beginning of every school year where part of the art supplies you needed was an oil cloth that you put on top of the desk and the smell that it had.

The music assemblies that were led by Mrs. Prone (I think that was her name).

Coming home after school and watching TV shows like:

The Mickey Mouse Club

American Bandstand

Wild Bill Hickock

Superman

Popeye Theatre (with Sally Star of course). Remember the guy that substituted for her every now and then who called himself Yo' Sammity Sam?

Remember Gunner Back, the news anchor for ABC, Wally Canaan the weather man

Prime time westerns like Maverick, Sugarfoot, Bronco Lane, Cheyenne, The Rebel, Wanted Dead or Alive, The Lone Ranger

Other TV shows like Highway Patrol, Rescue 8, The Whirlybirds, Sky King, Fireball XL Five (a marionette tv show), Clutch Cargo cartoons where only the mouths moved,

the Saturday Night version of Bandstand where Dick Clark counted down the top ten hits of the week

Does anyone remember the bizzard of 1958? We lost power for about a week and my dad had to get dry ice so our food wouldn't spoil.

Those were the days.

P.S.-- I checked the kindergarten photo, Mrs. Weiss class, Moore. It's dated Nov. 1957. I think Merle Gay posted it somewhere in the past few months. I'm sitting next to Larry Inver, then Lisa Black. Also in the photo are Linda Bass, Robert Faber, Ilene Rittenberg, Gary Turetsky, Stanton Zucker, Sherry Weiner, Penny White, Linda Berman, Sydria Schneider and others--32 of us. We were all so adorable!! I'll try to scan it and get it posted. Toby, I don't see you in that picture, so maybe you were in a different class? Did we have kindergarten for one semester or a full year?

Reading all these memories really brings me back. Can't help but smile when I read all the memories. I went to Spruance and Fels. At Spruance we brought "milk money" to school for our daily carton of milk. I also remember banking day, but can't remember the bank. It was so simple then, and a lot more thoughtful in preparing us to be productive adults. I remember the crossing guard for Spruance, Angie, who crossed those of us who walked to school at Magee and Horrocks. She lived on Souder St and had twins, Tommy and Maryanne. I think they were our age, but don't remember them going to Northeast. I have my kindergarten picture from Spruance, which is different from the one that posted. I think mine is from 1B. When I figure out how to scan and send, I'll pass it along. I can identify a lot of people on the picture.

I am hoping to get in for the reunion. My family and I are coming in (we live in Scottsdale, AZ) for my mother's 90th birthday over Labor Day, so I'm not sure about a trip back a month later.

Kennedy assassination.........my grandfather died Nov 16, so we were sitting Shiva at my house. I remember it being 2 terrible deaths for our family.

Hello all, if I remember correctly, I was also a banker, I believe with Andrea Scharf, we were both bankers I believe for PSFS savings accounts in Solis-Cohen, Andrea, if you are out there, please let me know if I am correct. Sorry I missed you guys at Memories, as I live in Ventnor, and used to go there often with my wife, who I met at the Greenhouse, 11 years, just around our reunion time(oct. 4), my second wife, and we have a son, who is going to be 5 next month, figure if Jack Nicholson can do it, so can I, and Mick Jagger once said, "age is only a number". I have 3 grown daughters from my previous marriage, in their 20s.

It's pretty impressive (from a guy's perspective) that you finally scored a son on your second time around while already into your 50's.

I don't know of any additional scheduled Memories reunions but someone may try to do it.

Mark Laskin, I remember you so well from elementary school--I think you're in a picture from one of my birthday parties, but I'd have to find the photos and check. Can't count on my memory anymore.

Barbara Lewis, hi! You have me partly confused with Eileen Rudnick, who lived down the street from me on Kerper. Her nickname was Sugy. I didn't have a nickname. Eileen and I, oddly enough, never had any classes together, though we went to all the same schools. Except for art class. We both went to Saturday Morning School Art League. I attended it at NE from 7 to 12 grade. But Barbara, I'm sure we had some classes together, or Brownies, or something, because for sure I remember you.

Toby Schaffer, I didn't remember we were in both Mr. Myerov and Miss Ronaghan's classes. I used to have such a great memory. I do remember you very well, I assumed it was from high school. I did not remember about the sailboat he painted in our autograph books until you mentioned it. Now I can see it in my mind's eye very clearly. I have it in a box somewhere--I've got to find it! Re: kindergarten, I recently looked at the kindergarten picture, but don't recall if I was in am or pm, Jan-June 1957. I do remember I had Mrs Weiss the whole time (she's in the picture) and was in the class with Merle Gay, Bonnie Kauffman, Roz Katz, I think Larry Inver, Elissa Black--I've got to go find it and see if we were in the same class...I think it was AM--I remember waiting in the little driveway in the morning? with my mother to be let in. Toby, if you were at Fels, were we in 7-6 together?...Miss Ronaghan really was the musical director for Moore, as in Let's Put On A Show! Wasn't it great to be in her famous, yearly St Patrick's Day Show! We learned every Irish song in existence. It was so much fun!

Brenda Weiser and Dell: I would love to attend a Camp Council Reunion, but can't possibly attend in August because I live in Portland, Oregon and can only make one trip. I wonder who organizes them, and if there's any chance of moving it to October?!

Whoever had Mr Norsoph at Fels, so did I, but not for homeroom. He was a doll. I used to sit in science class and take notes of all the jokes he made. I have most of the Fels Chips magazines, but can't possibly lug them onto the airplane. Did anyone have Miss Likach, and remember having to relearn English as if we were Venutians? A trial program that that was a total flop. Also speed reading with Mr. Rodgers? Sandi, hi, it's hard to believe Fels has been condemned. How did that happen?!

I'm going on and on---sorry. These emails are bringing up so many memories, both good and bad. I'm finding it great fun to connect, even with people I never knew.

Hi Pete,

This is fascinating. As I read these rememberances, I keep trying to recall my elementary school and things we did. Frankly, we weren't much different from the scenes described here. Movies, music, lots of school work, certain teachers remain etched in memory.

The day (in my case, evening around 8:30 pm) President Kennedy was shot, there was a great bridge game going on in my house. The tv was on and I was watching a movie when it got interrupted with the announcement. The game ended right then and there, everyone was crying. I recall the adults discussing possibilities of another invasion of Poland by Russia. Interestingly enough, Poland had a week of mourning for him. I didn't sleep that night worried about a war. Like you, that night will stay with me forever.

I remember being at Fels in Mr. Leach's 7th grade music class when word came in that Kennedy was shot We were sent home on the bus, and when I arrived home- my brother told me he was dead. It was stunning.

I went to Moore school and remember my first grade teacher was Mrs. Walter. Does anyone remember her. She was very nice, I remember Third grade was Miss Klein ,Forth was Mrs Aikens , 5th was Mr, Rosenheim, and 6th Mrs. Ronahan. I do not remember my second grade teacher. Anyone have a clue.

I had Mr. Feldman in fourth grade too! He was strict but I loved him--and those every-month field trips and parties! I truly believe I learned more on those field trips than anything else in school (although I do know the difference between deserts and desserts--ha ha :-) ). I also had Mr. Rizzo in 5th. He was a lot easier and on the surface more fun than Feldman but I learned much more from Mr. F and have always appreciated and respected him. Here were my other teachers:

K - Mrs. Magill (?)-- Loved her and kindergarten was my favorite grade. Fingerpainting ROCKED! School kinda went downhill for me after that :-)

1st - Mrs. Stern -- hated her--she scared me (and scarred me--I still can't do math! lol). She truly lived up to her name!

2nd - Mrs. McNamara -- my favorite teacher. She was so kind--very patient and loving. Gave me a bottle of perfume for Christmas which slipped out of its box on the way home and shattered on the sidewalk. I was shattered too and still haven't quite gotten over it, though therapy is helping '-).

3rd - Miss Shehe (not Catherine--her sister--Margaret I think)-- she was pretty good but I hated those multiplication tables! You gotta love the name though.

4th - Mr. Feldman :-)

5th - Mr. Rizzo ;-)

6th - Mrs. Bell -- learned a lot about Science from her (her favorite subject)--hurricanes and tornados, etc.-- but I remember she played favorites and unfortunately I was not her "pet." I also remember the May Day parade and the Maypole Dance we put on. And I was one of the "Queen's Court."

7th - Bell, Stott and Kahn (?) - Hated Stott--another "Mrs. Stern." Plus she was the math teacher, so there you go... Kahn was nice. She was the Social Studies teacher as I recall. And Bell did Science.

Remember Mr. Blumberg our principal? I worked in his office for a while (don't remember how I got that gig). I remember him being very kind. I learned to spell principal because he was our "pal."

Anyone remember a play about a queen and a pot of gold? It was a "mystery" and the clue to finding the gold was "top fo dlog." I think I originally had the lead role as the queen but got sick and was out for a week. So they replaced me and I got a silly singing part instead. So much for my theatrical career.

I too remember the bell and flute club (thanks for jogging my memory--I'd forgotten that! Didn't Mrs. Bell run that?) and the PSFS savings club. I remember cards, not a bank, where your filled up the slots with quarters, dimes, nickels, etc. When it was full you turned it in and got a passbook. Or was that for something else? CUDOS for the person who said it helped pay for her honeymoon! Wow! You must have been some saver! I probably spent mine at Kresges on a Cupie Doll, a Hula Hoop or an outfit for my original ponytailed Barbie (sure wish I had saved that!).

I was in My Meyerov's class in 5th grade and he was an amazing teacher. He is still alive and was at J Hampton Moore School's 50th reunion several years ago. He still looks the same, no kidding. His father was a famous musician and song writer. He helped Frank Loesser write Guys and Dolls...for real. He used to talk about his dad all the time. Remember he signed our year books with a watercolor drawing of a pirate ship? I still have my J H Moore autograph book. Does anyone else? Caryn Leader signed it as well as Kenny Patrick, Cheryl Korman, Arlene Levitt( we're still friends!), Scott Cherry, Sharon Frank and a bunch of others. I had Miss Ronaghan in 6th grade. She was wonderful too. She had a pink piano in her classroom. I do remember the song books. They were amazing. When I think of the songs they had us sing it's unbelievable.....show tunes, songs by Rogers and Hart, Gershwin, Lerner and Lowe.... Can you just see that happening in today's elem. schools???? Not a chance. OMG< I really sound old.

In 6th grade our class put on a Japanese show. Miss R. taught us all about her trips to Mexico, the Orient, etc. I still have a history report I did for her on The Middle Ages.

Moore was a really good school. I have terrific memories of my years there.

I have my KG photo from Mrs Neibaurer's class. We were supposed to have Mrs Weiss , but she was ill so we had Mrs N as a long term sub. I went afternoons from Jan to June 1957. My classmates included Susan Seidleman the movie director who directed Suddenly Seeking Susan with Madonna. Susan lived at 1018 Kerper. Also in my class were Mona Mitchell, Gail Newman(we are still very close friends), Lisa Black, Lisa Weiss, Roy Goldman, Scott Cherry, Ana Maria Chiavala, Frank Lopresti, Fred Morrison, Larry Inver, and a whole bunch of others.

I too grew up in West Philly.My father had a funeral parlor on the corner of 51st & Chestnut,it's still a funeral parlor.My father was 55 when I was born,a survivor of Terezin & Auschwitz,he lost his entire family including his first 3 children.We moved to Jersey when I was 10,we only lived there for a year,the people in the neighborhood weren't fond of Jews.We moved to the Northeast when I was 11.I went to a private school until 10th grade when I transferred to Northeast.High school was difficult for me,I never felt as if I fit in.All the other kids had gone to elementary and junior high together and had formed groups that were hard to get in.I pretty much hung out with some kids who had transferred from Catholic schools.How amazing it is to me that after 40 years and a really good life,memories of high school are still a little painful.

I never knew your father was a holocaust survivor. My parents were survivors too. It's very sad and unfortunate that you went through that painful experience of feeling that you didn't fit in. It sounds like you were able to overcome those difficulties and adapt later in your life.

Hi Everyone,

just thought I would add a little to the conversation. Do you know that Fels has been condemned and is being torn down? My ex- husband's wife works there and she told me the situation had gotten so bad that the second floor had been off limits for a while. Last day of school is the last of fels. The NEW FELS is on the site of the old JFK hospital. Classes start in the fall.

The Solis Cohen memories are great. I can still see Mr. Bolton running out the room crying. It was the first time I had seen a grown man show that kind of emotion.

My brother still lives in my parent's old house on Kindred Street. And while I have tried to convince him otherwise, he is taking my niece out of private school and sending her to our alma mater starting in September. She is in the magnet school.

As for the "OLD KING GEORGE " quote ... wasn't that a line from a song the Mr. Feldman taught in 4th grade? I never had Mr. Meyerov.

Some other Solis-Cohen teacher memories, Mrs Zallas (math was the sports team averages, especially the Phillies), Miss Cerino, the blonde haired pony-tailed teacher. I feared her almost as much as Miss Levin in 1st grade, but she forced me to have the legible handwriting I have today.

Well, keep up the memories. Oh, and Arlene, I remember your father delivering the bagels to our house every Sunday morning.

This is Miriam(Meles)Piatetsky.I attended Moore,Fels and NE.Where have the last 40 years gone, since we all said good bye to the "noble school standing on a busy city street?"Some memories are ever so vivid and others---------------well, they've sort of faded with my youth. At Moore, a yucky memory is going to the nurse's office for the annual weigh in.Oh, how I hated when they announced your weight out loud for all of your friends to hear.(chubby children hated that).How about trying to squeeze your way onto the bus going to Fels when it was already over-packed when it arrived at Loretto and Unruh?(please Mr Bus Driver----you can stop and squeeze on another kid).And the day that Pres Kennedy was shot----I was at an orchestra rehearsal with Mr. Yudkin.(I played violin).Everyone left school early that day----and it seemed so gloomy all the way home.And my Hebrew class at NE High was great.I took Hebrew as my language because I knew that I could ace the course.In fact, I recently saw Mr.Schachter, at a hotel down the shore during Passover.He's still feisty and on the ball.Yes, we all loved the wiggily waggily sliding board. How about that iron giraffe that you could climb inside of at Max Myers.And the pool-----------I can still smell the strong chlorine that they poured into the water.Remember when they would add chlorine and everyone had to get out of the pool? Too often that powdery stuff would blow into your eyes when they poured it into the pool if it was a little windy out.As for the kiddie t.v. shows in those days-----I was on Happy the Clown with my little brother, once.I rode on the top of Chippie the Chipmunk and my brother rode in the cart that the engine pulled. I was also on Our Gang,Pete Boyle.I entered a contest to win a puppy. You had to name the puppy and write an essay telling why you wanted to win the dog.Guess what???Yep, I won the little doggie.So, the next week they taped the program and I received the dog.It was on a Friday morning.By Monday morning, my father took the dog back(it had to be returned to the ASPCA if for some reason you couldn't keep it). I guess my parents weren't the pet owning type. I was so upset with my parents.Okay, that's it for now.I'll follow the e-mails and add more next time. Wishing everyone a safe and pleasant summer.

This is so cool, going through all of the old memories. I remember Tarken playground, but they only had showers. If you wanted to swim you had to hike it over to Max Meyers.

Yes, I remember Mrs. Lipschutz at Carnell. I remember reading the Bible in the autotorium. That's where I learned the 23rd Psalm. I do remember where I was when Kennedy was shot. We were having parent visitation (at Fels Jr. High) and I was a usher. I remember feeling hopeless.

How about the first space ship? (I don't even remember when that was.) I do remember we all gathered around a small black and white TV.

I used to go to the Benner Movies on Saturday afternoons. You could stay for hours. Candy in the vending machine was 5 cents.

Any info. on Howard Fatell ?

I just visited Nord Zeidner in Ft. Collins, Colorado, who I became exceptionally close with in high school (he lived around the corner attended Solis, Wilson, then Central ). At one time I worked at Welsh's luncheonette and at closing time I could take the remaining coffee. I then went over Nord's house where we played ping pong, pool and worked diligently to solve the problems of the world. He left the area at aged 18 for college and never returned but we forged a bond which has stayed strong. He's a virologist working for CDC, intially trained as a veternarian and has had some interesting overseas assignments. He came to Phila. with his wife and family in 2000 to attend my son's Bar Mitzvah at the now defunct OCJCC-BI.

Special hi back to Mike Jacobs. I'm pretty sure I sat next to you in Miss Ronaghan's class--right side of the room, first row.

The day Kennedy was shot I was in class at Fels in 7th grade. I think I was sitting in Miss Ostheimer's class--were we sent to homeroom? They made an overhead announcement at about 1 pm
and everyone at school was sent home. My piano teacher, a wonderful man in his 60's, died one week later. In February the Beatles showed up on Ed Sullivan. In March my father died. Very strange year for me.

I am so enjoying all these recollections of the good ol' days! Allen Rosen (Hi Marlene!) wanted to know if anyone else lived in West Philly. I lived there at 61st and Catherine St and went to Bryant Elementary for Kindergarten and 1st grade. We moved from my grandparents' house there to Oakland St after that year. I knew David Brenner was from that 'hood after reading his book. He mentioned Mr. Crappy, the hardware store man. I remembered walking past his store all the time. I also remember when the church on the corner of 61st and Catherine was struck by lightening, triggering the fear of thunder and lightening I had until my late 20s.

I definitely remember where I was when Kennedy was shot. I was in 7th grade at Mayfair Elementary (yes, another move) and it was just about time for us to go to gym. But that day the gym teacher came to our room instead and was whispering something to our teacher. Her expression suddenly became very solemn and she looked like she was about to cry. The gym teacher walked us to gym and sat us in a circle. He then told us what was know at that time. I remember the first report was that Kennedy was shot while riding horse, but we soon learned that was not the case. Everyone was crying, even the boys. I remember going home after school to find my grandmother crying in front of the tv, and when my mom came home from work she was crying, too. What a sad day. By any chance does anyone recall reading a very interesting article by Truman Capote regarding Kennedy's assassination and his (?) theory that Kennedy was still alive? I wish I still had the article. I've tried a couple times to locate it on the internet but so far I haven't found it.

Cynthia I may know who you are married to. What is his 1st name? Did he live on Tyson Street? Did anyone in cyberspace go to Crossan Elementary school? Susan Miller from our class is the secretary there now. Ellen that knew Barbara L. - chance you by any chance update us on how she is doing? The "FAT" man being referred to as Dean Allen was Mr. Simpson. His sidekick Melvin McMasters with the large forehead eventually became principal at Masterman and has since retired.

I remember the Polar Cub. How about Saturday's at the Cavalier on Cottman Street????? Allan did you know Sally Starr was a whore? My father and uncle did. Carol Mac Millian that graduated with us won a HUGE treasure chest of toys from her show by sending in a Good & Plenty wrapper. I bought a Sally Starr doll a few years ago to add to my icon doll collection. I also saw her at The American Cowboy Bat about 10 years ago. Her house had burnt down many years ago and she is looking to get her memorabilia back if anyone has any. I also saw Soupy Sales and Clarabelle. I saw Buffalo Bob at the Antique Show in Atlantic City about 12 years ago. And I got all their autographs too! Lucky me....

I remember the sugar cube polio treats too...I got mine at NE High School. I loved the slide at Max Myers but my local playground was Jardel and the Halloween parties they had there where you got to touch brains, eye balls etc , as well as the hula hoop contests. In the summer they would have arts & crafts. I took dancing lesson there for $.25 with Carol Macmillan, Ginger Garten, Marilyn Kowalic and Helen Reese. Ginger went on to become a dance major at Boston University. I remember a truck being parked outside there and after swimming you would get a $.10 water ice and a $.05 pretzel.

Anyone with family or relatives in the NE please let me know when they want to move. I love to collect old memorabilia as the reunion committee can attest to. Also if they have old items or beach tags from AC please keep me in mind. I love what Wendy Goldman's mom gave me.

Hi- Dennis (denny) Horn here....great memories of Spruance- I also recall the JFK ordeal...I was in 7th grade at Fels, getting on the bus at end of day, and hearing of it then....My first instinct was to go to Spruance and bond with my teachers, having just graduated from there....the big TV's were set up in the auditorium aisles, and we all commiserated....I recall fondly, when we bore witness to JFK on Castor Ave...I was perched on a newspaper box, at the SW corner of magee and Castor...the motorcade came south on Castor, so I was within 25 feet of THE MAN !!! Too bad I forgot a camera!!

Hi all, This is Donna Westle Batterman. I'm having so much fun reading everyone's blogs. Stirring up a lot of memories. I went to Spruance/Fels. Does anyone remember being in Mrs. Meyer's 4th grade class? Until she felt your handwriting skills were improved enough to suit her, you were not permitted to be a member of the "Pen Club" and still had to use a pencil. It was a big deal to belong to the "Pen Club". Mrs. Kramer was my 1st grade teacher & died a number of years ago. Her son is one of the OB dr.'s in the area. I was in 7th grade at Fels on that Friday afternoon when Kennedy was shot. My 7th grade Social Studies teacher, Mr. Gottlieb made us all make scrapbooks of the whole assassination as an assignment. My father was really angry that we had to cut up newspapers that were part of history. So he decided to do make the "Scrapbook" himself because he wanted it done correctly. The only time my parents did that. But I got an A. By the way, my daughter has taught in Moore for a few years now. I know in September she will be teaching 4th grade in room 217 in the old building for those of you who can remember it. I am trying to get off from work for the reunion in October & hope to see you all then. Now I have to go find my Spruance pictures.

Debbie, I think about the song we sang for graduation at Carnell as well! I don't know why I remember it. It was a good song. In the past couple of years, it came up when we were discussing growing up in Oxford Circle.

I have fond memories of walking up Frontenac St. to Carnell. Tarken Playground was on one side. You walked to school with friends. Walking to Fels was good as well.

Years ago, when I taught & lived in Philadelphia, one of my best friends taught at Carnell. The gym teacher, Mr. O'Conner was still teaching at the time. Unfortunately, my friend told me he had a drinking problem.

My husband (not from our class) went to Moore & his favorite teacher was Miss Ronaghan. Someone mentioned that in an earlier letter.

This is so interesting! All these different elementary schools, different and similar activities. I never knew about Sat afternoon movies at the Tyson. Maybe it was a little far for me (1100 Kerper). I have no idea what I did on Saturdays when I was in elem school.

Caryn, good to see your name and hear from you. I remember you so well from Moore. And somewhere back there I saw Sandi Dodek's name. Hi Sandi. Caryn, I remember going to Pennypack Park, but not much more than that. I do remember him showing slides of his summer vacation to California, including pictures of his family and him in shorts (a teacher in shorts?!). More giggling. Do you remember that?

Pete, Mr. Myerov was a musician and artist, and while he taught us all the stuff he was supposed to, we had lots of music education and art projects. I think everyone wanted to get into his class, he was a very popular teacher. (He played the piano to Miss Ronaghan's music direction for our music auditoriums. Who remembers the "music books" with mimeographed copies of all the words to the songs they taught us? I think I still have it in a box somewhere!) I remember an assignment to do a group skit, I think my group did it on Beethoven. I also remember a project with doll-making. In addition he was funny and charismatic and easy-going. He really wanted to teach music (he gave piano lessons in-home, and in fact came to our house and gave my brother lessons several years before I was in his class) and eventually became music director at one of the major synagogues.

Dell, hi, didn't we know each other at Camp Council? You lived on the same street as David and Beth Gubernick.

I remember, as if it were yesterday, a documentary about Danny Kaye and UNICEF they showed at Moore to support the yearly collection of money for UNICEF at Halloween. I think I was in first grade and didn't know who Danny Kaye was, but fell in love with him instantly!

This is Allan Rosen...Marlene Abrams husband.

I graduated NE in '66...a few years older.

I grew up in W. Philly before moving to NE in '64. In elementary school (Bryant School-60th and Cedar Ave), I was the class Treasurer. We had a banking day every week, and I think it was on Thursday. We used PSFS as our bank. Back then, I think there was only PNB and PSFS (we used to call it piss-face :-) ) That was the building in Center City that had lit letters on the roof. If the letters were white, it meant a sunny day. The letters could also be in Red or in Green. One of those colors meant rain, the other color meant cloudy (but I'm not sure which was which. I think the letters are still part of the city landscape, even though the bank itself is long gone. And I still think they color the letters according to the weather.)

Anyway, we also had green for the savings book. My recollection back then was 6% interest. Many kids would bank from $.10 to a quarter most often-with the occasional $1.00 and the ultra rare $5.00 and even rarer &10.00. My job was not only for my class, but I oversaw the other 5 classes. I would have to count up all the deposits from everyone, made sure the deposit slips were made out correctly, pack it all in a thick manila envelope, and send it off through the school office. A couple days later, all the bank books were returned, and they were given back to the students with the amount of their latest current deposit and of course, their total of savings up to date. The best part was around Christmas, when everyone got their 6% interest.

I was elected class treasurer in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade because I was the fortunate one that deposited $1- to $2 every week. Of course, it came straight from Dad, who was a strong believer in saving for the future.

I don't recall banking days in Jr. High (I went to Masterman along with Michael Bacon (Bacon Brothers), and I knew his little brother Kevin as well.) I also don't recall any banking days once I got to NE High.

Is there anyone out there that grew up in W. Philly near 60th Street-south side of Market. I had a friend, Eddie Shapson, that lived across the street from me in W. Philly. He was one of the first ones to migrate to NE. He moved to 7224 Large St, as I remember the long bus rides to visit him. The Polar Cub was right around the corner from him on Cottman. Rhawn Street was about the limits of NE back then, with S Klein on the square at the Cottman/Blvd shopping center. The absolute furthest limit was Bell's corner, where my cousin had a restaurant called Mardi Gras. They had the best waffles and ice cream. That restaurant became Barson's when the Mardi Gras went out. We also had a Barson's on 60th Steeet just south of Cedar. David Brenner was another neighbor from W. Philly

Anyway, I have vivid memories of my youth with Breakfast Time with Wee Willy Weber, Chief Halftown, Bertie the Bunyip, Sally Starr and Clutch Cargo (with Paddlefoot), the Mickey Mouse club, The Lone Ranger, and Buckskin Billy (with puppy dog contest time).

Wow-50+ years still almost feels like yesterday for me.

I am loving all these memories from Solis and the hood. Some more words to the song, Old King George couldn't sleep in his bed and on that fateful morn, Old Uncle Sam was born.

I moved my parents from Kindred St about 9 years ago. My mom lives at Valmont on 7600 Blvd. so I still get to see all the old haunts. Has anyone seen Solis Cohen lately. There is now a brand new Primary School on the grounds close to Bustleton and Princeton. Square dancing in Ms. Bells room was fun for Fridays afternoon. I have such a clear memory of Stott running in to Mrs. Bell's class on the day Kennedy was shot shouting, Ruth, Ruth, the president was shot. We were all stunned. We were in the middle of practicing for some show, but then all got sent home.

I knew Mr Singer (Harry) fairly well. My brother Jeff, is married to his daughter, Kim. He passed away about 5 years ago. I've only heard great stories about him. He was a great guy.

Also, my brother Jeff & I had our first jobs at Rapoport Pharmacy on the corner of Tyson & Bustleton. Jeff started working there when he was 14 years old.....and he's still there.

Eventually he bought the pharmacy from the Rapoport family.

Did anyone have Mrs. Kandiner in 5th grade at Solis Cohen?

I did. All that I will say is..."Drum Sticks".

That should jar a memory or two.

Also, I still have a couple of copies of the Solis Cohen Cronicle from the late 1950's.

Gotta love the memories. Special hello to Caryn and Eileen - I was in both your classes with Mr. Myerov and Miss Ronaghan at MOORE School. I too can't remember ever wanting to be a banker (like Kramer on the Seinfeld show).

I have attached two early vintage photos for the archives - one is of the 1956 Kindergarten class at Moore School and the other is a 1958 Hiawatha Day Camp photo. I recall that Jimmy Goldstein had the hots for the Junior Counselor in the photo. Please identify yourselves in the photos. These photos are over 50 years old - YIKES!

My fondest memories of Elementary School took place on the playground - specifically Tarken Playground and the Peanut League and Little League. At previous NEHS reunions there is always a Tarken Playground mini-reunion and the guys recall those days like it was yesterday. I was on a team called the Buffaloes. There were also teams called the Rams, the Tigers, the Bears, the Lions, etc.

the witches' castle in the schoolyard
Mrs. Peterson's 5th and 6th grade class- playing the "resonator" bells, having to do something (sing, write a paper) if you were marked in a book (kept by one of the students) for talking too much, listening to the typewriter song and pretending you were typing, learning about Marion Anderson and Degas, watching the first time in outer space in the auditorium, graduation without any parents invited

going to the pool on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (T, Th, and S were for boys)

Solis Cohen, 6th grade, Mrs. Shapiro. The Isolation Row. This was genius. Put all the kids who were disruptive (read talked to their "neighbors" in class), on a separate row right next to the windows. Now that's not a distraction, is it? I remember not paying any attention to the lessons & getting lost on staring outdoors. And, of course, we still had neighbors to the right of us & could still talk to them. Brilliant. Bet some of us "trouble-makers" had ADD or ADHD, which wasn't labeled way back then.

Oh, and the comments on our report cards. Mine always said, "Dell is a good student; but she must control her talking to her neighbors." I'm still a talker. Once a gabber, always a gabber, I say.

Wilson Jr. High, Dean Allen (remember the guy who looked & sounded like a Marine Drill Sgt?) who was the Enforcer, the Disciplinarian. In my 20's, I substitute taught at Wilson. I was filling in for Mr. Allen. LOL. I also "taught" some classes there. I could not control the kids, at all. Other teachers would come in to see what the rucous was. I used to go back to my mother's house at lunchtime & cry. I think I lasted a week.

You're confusing Dean Allen with someone else at Wilson. Dean Allen was at NE. Perhaps you're thinking of Mr. Kates at Wilson.

BTW, I got similar remarks on my report card.

Pete, On my block, there are only 2 of the old guard left, my mother & another older woman whose daughters went to Solis Cohen, Diane and Michelle Reibel. I've been wanting my mother to move for at 20 years. She's looked at a few other houses, even put a deposit down; but something's always wrong with the places, i.e., no garage, no gas cooking, etc. etc. At this point, I don't think she'll ever move. It is her life & she's got all her faculties, still works full time at the same job since I was 9 years old. So you've got an aunt and uncle still there, too. Wow!

Most people, especially as they get older, don't like change. It's not surprising. My cousins and I have been urging my aunt and uncle to move for years now. they have finally said yes so they may move this summer.

Yes, Mrs. Stott. I remember going home and crying after I was in her room the first day because she seemed so mean and strict. But I grew to like her and I know I learned things from her--I just don't remember what they were!

Also, it was a good group of people to be with, especially since we stayed together for 6th and 7th grades. I made a bunch of friends that I hung around with at least until college: Andi Horn, Barbara Lindenbaum, Shelli Vernick, and Elaine Auritt.

I know I sat next to you in one class and had lots of laughs and looked forward to that class.

I didn't realize that Kennedy was killed so soon after your father died.

I remember being lined up in Mrs. Stott's class (size order, as per usual) and her telling us about the assassination. She was stoic, as always.

I can't imagine what you personally went through during that time, but I have a hunch that you'll get a huge response on where individuals were the day Kennedy was shot.

I remember being in Mr. Boulton's 7th grade class after he was shot, but before it was announced that he died. Mr. Boulton had the radio on so that the class could listen to what was happening. When they announced the president was dead he got up from his seat turned off the radio and went running out of the room crying leaving his students alone. You could hear a pin drop in that classroom because every kid was in a state of shock.

We do have a Facebook site, in fact several Facebook sites. Gary Moskowitz started one just for our class and then we have a couple of reunion facebook sites. It does get some discussion but not enough classmates visit frequently enough to get a good discussion going.

Perhaps you can start a NE69 Facebook site and moderate it so we get more of these interesting discussions going.

For now, I have this email chain and a message board on our ne69 homepage that seem to be getting a lot of attention.

Pete, Oh my god (OMG). I replied to you without knowing you had fw other em. This is killing me! Mae Desmond players, .50 - absolutely. I remember Beauty & the Beast. I also felt guilty asking for .50 cause my father was ill & my mother was a secretary for the Federal Govt. We didn't have much to make ends meet. But my mother managed. Hi everybody. Hi Pete. I'm amazed at the discussion about banking! I remember my Western Savings Bank account, and continuing to use it when I was in college. But I have no memory of anything else about it other than my savings book, wasn't it green?...OK, this is weird, all of a sudden I'm having some memory of a small brown envelope and change and it being collected. Wow, those memories ARE back there somewhere. Can anyone who really does remember fill in the details?

I went to Moore, and I am happy to find some Moore folks out there. I remember the switch to full year semesters very clearly during the summer between 4th and 5th grades--the school offered a make-up class in the summer for the kids who had the "A" class in winter semester--and I remember those sticky hot summer days in school with Miss Labess. It was really useless and I was sorry I went. Anyone else remember the summer we had the switch?

Absolutely, the best teacher in elementary school was Mr. Myerov, who was my 5th grade teacher, with Miss Ronaghan and her pink piano in 6th grade a very close second.

I think all of the elem schools had banking. It was a great marketing tool for WSFS. At Moore, we also had a book mobile. This was in the early days before we had a school library. Once a week, the book mobile came to our classroom and we could borrow a book. As for teachers, Mrs. Goleman was the bitchiest (even my mother hated her) and Mr. Myerov was the best!

I remember being part of the Chronicle, too. And the flute and bell club run by Mrs. Stott, my 6th & 7th grade teacher. (I bet you remember her, Pete.) She gave me the "honor" of standing next to her and turning the pages in her music book while she played piano during the assemblies.

Then there was Mr. Geltz (sp?) who had us square dancing once a week in his class. I'm quite sure that there wasn't much square dancing going on anywhere else in Northeast Philly.

My favorite day of the year was when the May Desmond Players came and performed a play.

YES! Miss Galter was my favorite teacher too. She was young and pretty. She had dark hair. But once when we had a "city test" she told us not to "raise our hands for anything." I had to go to the bathroom and I didn't know what to do, so I wet my pants!!!! Miss Galter told my mother she had learned a lesson.

My meanest teacher was one of the Miss Sheehy's. I remember that one of them would take bad kids out in the hall and bang their heads against the wall---or at least that is what I either saw or was told.

Does anyone else remember the yearly play in the auditorium---it was always Beauty and the Beast. I also remember being in The Mikado--wearing a homemade kimono and being in the chorus ( where I was told not to sing, only mouth the words! )

I remember you being in the chorus for the Mikado but I never knew that you were told not to sing. It's amazing the little things that you learn so many years later. Isn't technology great!

I remember running around buying fabric for a kimono to wear in the Mikado. I was lucky because my uncle was a tailor and he made the kimono for me.

I don't remember Miss Galter but that was a terrible thing to do to you. And Miss Sheehy banging kids against the wall! My how times have changed. Perhaps a little too far in the opposite extreme, today every teacher has to be wary of lawsuits etc.

I'm finding all this reminiscing interesting since I am currently teaching at Solis-Cohen, (along with several other NE classmates.) I also went to Spruance for 2nd grade and then moved (again). I don't think any of your teachers are still at Solis-Cohen, though! Solis-Cohen is growing again.......the new Primary School is opening in September and will be for kindergarten and 1st grades. We haven't been for a tour through it as yet but I hear it's beautiful inside. For those of you who went to Solis-Cohen, yes the halls are still really narrow, and I swear it must be half a mile from one end of the building to the other! Rumor has it that the architect who designed the building committed suicide after that, and the kids going there now have told me the school is haunted, though I haven't seen any ghosts roaming around! The building is a strange design with all the wings off the main hallway, and I still haven't figured out what room numbers are in what wing! I was also amazed to see that there was a real fireplace in the Kindergarten room! I wonder if that was ever used as I didn't think that would be permitted in a school this side of the 1800's.

Back in the early 80's I also taught at Spruance for a year, and was surprised to learn that many of the teachers that were there when I taught there were also there when I was a student! Remember Mrs. Ida Kramer, Mrs. Adele Flinker, Mr. Catalano, Mr. Cusack, Mr. Satz, and Mrs. Bernice Jacobs, and a few others whose names escape me at the moment.

I also remember school banking with PSFS, I just can't remember at what school(s) or what day(s). Unfortunately I didn't return to the "hood" until starting at NE in 10th grade. I really do wish I had gone to elementary and junior high with everyone.

I do remember my PSFS account, which helped to pay for my honeymoon. I remember the Chronicle, and how exciting it was to have a poem published at Solis Cohen. My worst memory was my fifth grade teacher Miss Freedman. She was the meanest teacher in the world. She would make us stand at our desk when we had a question., We had to say, "No Miss Freedman", and "Yes Miss Freedman". I don't know why she became a teacher, because she definitely hated children. I also remember the flute and bell club and the bazaar every year. There was also "children's day" where we had lunch at school. My favorite teacher was Miss Galter in the 2nd grade.

Oh yes. I remember our 5th grade teacher at Solis Cohen. Miss Friedman was like a Prussian general. She was so strict and rigid and terrified me on more than a few ocassions. She made a point of singling me out to open the door for her as we walked thru the hallways and say "excuse me" whenever I walked in front of her. While I remember how strict she was, I also came to realize that she also taught me to have good manners and be polite which did come in handy as I pursued a professional career.

I also remember the flute and bell club. Even more than that, I remember being in the play The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan. I was in the chorus and was also the understudy for the leading man which was performed beautifully by Howard Fatell. I think the only reason I got the understudy role was because I was the only one to volunteer.

But I so vividly remember the last day of her class when some classmates were crying that they would miss her while I felt relieved that I made it through the year without raising her ire.

My favorite teacher was Mr. Feldman. If you were lucky enough to be in his class, you were treated to a monthly party and class trip. I also remember being in the bottle orchestra ( I was C minor) that Mr. Feldman proudly presented to the auditorium near the end of the year.

Sadly, I can't remember who I an in line with---but on the other hand--I don't think I ever knew or that it matters.

Hi, everyone. I was the fifth grade Banker for Moore and went with the Sixth
grade banker, Norman Most. Our adviser: ( you will love this) was MR.
Banker. YUP! Really...
And we went to Western Savings Bank on Castor ave on Friday mornings.

Many and I mean many, when Mellon took over Western I was in the Inquirer as
one of WSFS's last customers. See you all in October.

I share Rich Magaziner's memories. I recall being in class with him and Nancy in Spruance. Just don't ask me to dig up a copy of our kindergarten class picture.

I'll add another item to think about in this elementary school discussion. At dinner on Saturday, Bob & Holly Lankin and I reminisced about what grades we skipped when Philadelphia eliminated the half year A & B classes, making each grade a full year.

Moore school had banking day on Mondays. Marc Wexler (6th grade banker with Lynn Saunders)

Carnell was also Mondays. Marcia (Levitan) Wexler (banker too)

I didn't know we had so many distinguished bankers in our class.

I have to admit that it is with pleasure and a bit of envy that I read thiese reminiscences. I finished grade school in Poland and remember whatever it is that I remember and I fell a bit of melancholy for all who have ththese memories to share. I also must have been in the same class in Spruance with Nancy. It seemed so amusing as I read the comment about the spelling of "dessert".I thought in my mind almost word for word the way Nancy worded her how she remembered the difference between "desert and dessert"

All the local schools had a Western Saving Fund Society program to teach kids to save not just Solis Cohen

Western Savings did have some good marketing ideas. It's surprising they didn't survive past the S & L debacle of the 80's. PSFS didn't last much longer.

I do remember banking day at Solis Cohen - but now only at the suggestion below that it exised. It is my recollection that it was probably around 5th grade. I however banked at the second national bank at Cottman and Horrocks St., so did not partake.

I went to Spruance, and we also had "banking day" from Western Saving Fund Society. Our day was Tuesday.
Pete- I was always told that the way to remember the difference between how to spell desert and dessert is that dessert has an extra s and we always want more dessert.

Of course I remember WSFS. It felt important having my own savings book. How much did I add each week, hum? I remember May Day, Desmond Players, assemblies, and every teacher I had.

As far as deserts, desserts would be much better.
